This year hundreds of student-athletes will be honored on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, in the 24th annual National Student-Athlete Day. The athletic department of Howard Payne University recognizes 121 student-athletes for their success in the classroom, on the field of play, and in their everyday life.
To qualify for this honor a student-athlete must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater, made a significant contribution to their team, and maintained a high level of integrity in their everyday life.
Howard Payne last season honored 121 student-athletes and again honors 121 this year. The previous six years number of student-athletes honored on this day went up at Howard Payne.
Mike Jones, Director of Athletics at Howard Payne University, said “What a wonderful opportunity it is to recognize almost one half of our student athletes that have not only achieved success in athletics but also in academics. Howard Payne University Athletics places strong emphasis on degree completion and the overall quality of the educational experience. Congratulations to these that have achieved such a high standard in both athletics and academics.”
National STUDENT-Athlete Day honors student-athletes and the network of parents, coaches, teachers and school systems that make it possible for young people to strike a balance between academic and athletic achievement. The day, established by the National Consortium for Academics & Sports and Northeastern University’s Center for the Study of Sport in Society, is co-sponsored by the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
