The Howard Payne University Heritage Singers will perform a special concert entitled “Yesterday Once More: The Music of the Carpenters,” featuring the music of 1970s pop duo. The concert will be held on Monday, March 21, at 8 p.m. in Grace Chapel. The chapel is located in HPU’s Paul and Jane Meyer Faith and Life Leadership Center.
The concert will include popular hits such as “Yesterday Once More,” “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Superstar,” “Goodbye to Love” and “Merry Christmas, Darling.” The Heritage Singers are under the direction of Dr. Monte Garrett, associate professor of music and director of choral activities.
Randy Schmidt, the author of Little Girl Blue: The Life of Karen Carpenter, will be a special guest during the program. He will read several excerpts from his book, share stories about the Carpenters and provide background on several of the songs that will be performed. Last summer, the book was named a New York Times “Editor’s Choice.”Schmidt teaches music in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He compiled and edited Yesterday Once More: Memories of the Carpenters and Their Music and served as creative consultant for several television documentaries on the Carpenters, including the E! “True Hollywood Story,” A&E’s “Biography” and VH1’s “Behind the Music.”
