hpu_football_logoPINEVILLE, Louisiana – Louisiana College picked off Howard Payne quarterback Richard Young six times in a 55-28 conference loss for the Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon.

Despite being outscored 55-28, the Yellow Jackets led the Wildcats in total offense 513 yards to 483.yards. Howard Payne QB Richard Young was 22-for-45 passing for 360 yards and two TDs. But it was the six thrown interceptions, four in the first half, that proved to be the difference in the game.

The Wildcats opened up a 14-0 lead scoring on a 65 yard pass and a 15 yard reception in the first quarter.

The Jackets answered back after that when Sayvon Young-Cormier hauled in a 65 yard pass from Richard Young. It capped a three play, 71 yard drive taking 1:13 off the clock.

LC then picked off a 15 yard pass and returned it for a TD, extra point failed, and completed a 28 yard TD pass to extend their lead to 27-7 midway through the second quarter.

Then with 7:07 left in the second, Young-Cormier grabbed his second TD reception of the day this time a four yard pass from Young. That drive was 10 plays over 77 yards.

LC extended their lead again after two additional TDs, one before the half to lead 34-14 at the break and then one on their first possession of the third quarter. 41-14 LC

HPU’s Caisson Montieth scored on a six yard run to pull the Jackets to within twenty 41-21 with 10:38 left in the third.

The Wildcats pushed their lead to 55-21 after two fourth quarter scores before the Jackets were able to score again. HPU’s AJ Hettler ran it in from 12 yards out with 3:26 left in the game to cap a 10 plays 75 yard drive for Howard Payne.,

Caisson Montieth did a little of everything for the Jackets offensively rushing for 48 yards on 11 carries and five receptions for 115 yards. Colby Mica finished with seven catches for 96 yards.

Jason Disney led the HPU defense with 10 tackles, seven solo and one sack. Victor Gonzales recorded nine tackles, eight solo.

Howard Payne is now 4-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play. LC stands at 4-4 overall and 2-1 in ASC action. The Yellow Jackets will take on national power Mary Hardin-Baylor next Saturday in Brownwood starting at 1:00 pm.
