Howard Payne University TowerPress release from Howard Payne University – Christmas celebrations are underway at Howard Payne University with two musical events scheduled later this week. HPU’s Symphonic Band and Concert Choir will present a Christmas celebration concert Thursday, December 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s Mims Auditorium. The following evening, Friday, December 2, the university will present its annual tradition of “A Service of Nine Lessons and Carols” at 7:30 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Brownwood. Both events are free of charge and open to the public.

The band and choir will perform several selections at Thursday’s concert including “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson, “Christmas Through the Looking Glass” by David Lovrien, “Holiday Overture” by Kenneth Soper and “Carol of the Bells” by Robert Longfield. There will be a reception following the concert in the band rehearsal hall of HPU’s Davidson Music Complex. Music will be provided at the reception by the HPU Student Jazz Combo.

Everyone is encouraged to bring a canned food item as a donation for admission to Thursday’s concert. All canned goods collected will go to Good Samaritan Ministries of Brown County to aid those who need a helping hand this holiday season. Canned fruit is particularly needed.

Friday’s service includes Scripture readings about the prophecies and fulfillment of the coming Christ, in coordination with music that reflects the passages. HPU faculty and staff members will read the Scriptures and the university’s Heritage Singers will perform the musical selections with Dr. Allen Reed, retired professor of music, accompanying. St. John’s Episcopal Church is located at 700 Main Street in Brownwood.

The HPU Symphonic Band is under the direction of Corey Ash, associate professor of music and director of bands. The HPU Concert Choir and Heritage Singers are under the direction of Dr. Christopher Rosborough, assistant professor of music.
