jacketbasketball_logoThe Howard Payne University women’s basketball team used balanced scoring in a 78-50 blowout win over conference opponent University of the Ozarks Monday evening at the Brownwood Coliseum.

The Lady Jackets outrebounded Ozarks 55-35 and got 40 points from their bench compared to just 12 for Ozarks.HPU improves to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play while Ozarks falls to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in ASC action.

Howard Payne scored 46 second half points to open up an already 32-20 halftime lead. The Lady Jackets held Ozarks to just 29% shooting for the game while shooting 41% themselves.

Brittany Roberson led HPU with 12 points and three steals. Jasmin Thomas followed with 11. Tresta Donahoo came off the bench and scored 10 with four assists and three steals. Roshonda Gayden added nine points and nine rebounds.

Ozarks was led by Sabrina Goddard with a game high 17 points with seven rebounds. April Young added 12 points and Lacey Phillips had five assists.

Howard Payne will have a road trip to Louisiana College and Mississippi Cillege on Thursday and Saturday.


An offensive rebound and putback by Howard Payne’s Michael Thompson lifts the Yellow Jackets past the University of the Ozarks 80-79 in conference action Monday evening at the Brownwood Coliseum.

After a Brandon Irwin three-pointer brings the Jackets to within one with 25 seconds remaining, Ozarks misses two free-throws to give HPU a shot to win the game.

Michael Thompson crashes the offensive board and puts back a missed layup with 12 second left to play to give HPU the 80-79 lead.

Thompson was fouled on the lay-in but missed his free-throw to complete the three-point play. Ozark’s Bryton Flint was fouled with three seconds left and had two free-throws to tie or win the game.

Flint missed both attempts and the Jackets secured the rebound to gain the victory 80-79.Howard Payne is now 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play while the Ozarks fall to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in ASC action.

Both teams had red hot shooting in the first half with HPU at 57% and Ozarks at 63%. Ozarks held a 52-48 halftime advantage.

The Jackets took the lead 56-54 with 14:08 left in the game on a Thompson layup. Ozarks put together a run to retake the lead and push in to 9, 69-60 with seven minutes left.Howard Payne began to slowly battle back and found themselves down 6, 78-72, with 1:18 left. HPU outscored Ozarks 8-1 in the closing minute on two Brandon Irwin three-pointers and the Thompson layup.

Irwin led HPU with a game high 21 points with seven rebounds. Joshua Dada followed with 12 points. Ja’Kalan Gayden had eight points and nine rebounds. Brandon Gould scored seven with five assists and three steals.

Jermery Victor had 18 for Ozarks followed by Marcus Bobb with 17. Bryton Flint finished with 15 and David Robertson added 13.

The Jackets will travel to Louisiana College on Thursday before going to Mississippi College for a Saturday game.
