hpubaseballBROWNWOOD, Texas – After suffering a late inning comeback loss 8-5 to Schreiner University in game one, the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets blowout the Mountaineers 14-7 in game two of the conference double header Saturday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

Howard Payne rallied from three down to take a 5-3 lead after six innings only to have the Mountaineers post a five-run top of the seventh to take game one 8-5. HPU starter Gilbert Barrera threw six innings of work giving up three runs on five hits. He had struckout eight Schreiner batters and the Jackets held a 5-3 advantage when Carlton Brown came in the close out the game. Brown would give up five runs on on four hits in the loss. Ryan Abbott was 2 of 4 from the plate and Brown also in the lineup at the Jackets DH was 2 of 3.

The Jackets only needed the first two innings of game two to put away Schreiner posting four runs in the first and ten in the second. Schreiner added three runs of their own in the second but the Jackets were too far ahead and cruised to the 14-7 win. Jordan Hammontree was huge in the game going 3 of 5 from the plate with four RBIs. Dustin Cole and San Dollahite each had three hits and Tyrone Ahin added two. Jonathan Morris got the win for HPU throwing seven innings of work. Derrick Berlanga finished out the last two frames for the Jackets.

Howard Payne will play next week in Abilene versus McMurry University with a single on Friday at 7:00 pm and a double header on Saturday at 1:00 pm.

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Howard Payne University took both ends of a doubleheader against Concordia University Texas on Saturday, March 24 at Old Settler’s Park. The Lady Jackets won the opener, 3-0, before winning a close one in the nightcap by a 2-1 decision.

Howard Payne (10-14, ASC 5-7) scored in the top of the first inning of the opener without recording a hit. After Concordia walked the bases loaded, Katie Poerner beat out a throw by the shortstop to put the Lady Jackets on the board. HPU added two more runs on an RBI double from Carissa Zarate and an Evangelina Tellez RBI single.

Kayla Castillo, meanwhile, retired the first 13 batters she faced until her perfect game was broken up with a walk in the fifth. A CTX single would break up the no-hitter an inning later.

Castillo, who yielded eight runs against the CTX yesterday, was near perfect for Howard Payne and improved to 3-6 overall by recording a one-hit shutout. She allowed only two Tornados to reach base and recorded one strikeout. Concordia’s Kat Moreno suffered the loss despite giving up just one earned run. She allowed five hits and fanned eight.

Howard Payne took advantage of two Tornado errors to plate an unearned run in the top of the first inning before Tellez doubled the lead when she singled down the line in left to drive in Zarate. Concordia fought back and sliced the deficit in half in the fourth by way of an RBI single, but Howard Payne shut the door from that point winning 2-1.

Baillie Trumbell picked up the victory for the Lady Jackets. She scattered five hits and struck out two while not issuing a walk. Concordia’s Teylor Schiefelbein got the loss surrendering two runs. She had four strikeouts and issued just one walk.

Howard Payne will play next on Thursday in Sherman, Texas against Austin College in a non-conference double header starting at 2:00 pm.
