HPU_BISDLogosStudents from both Howard Payne University and Brownwood High School will be learning from a mutually beneficial interactive learning opportunity crafted to help students succeed in the job world.

The program will provide HPU Human Resource Managements students experience writing job descriptions and interviewing candidates while Brownwood High School Economics students will be applying for the “jobs” and will learn to craft resumes and, in-turn, get experience interviewing for positions.

“I am really excited about this opportunity to work with HPU on the resume and interviews,” said BHS Economics teacher, David Edgin.  “I believe that this is something that all of our students need.  It will give them a good view of what it is actually like in the real world as they look for jobs.”

Near the beginning of the school year Edgin was contacted by Dr. Kevin Kelley, HPU Assistant Professor of Organizational Psychology, in regards to creating a program that would give his students the experience of actually doing interviews while also learning to recognize what good resumes look like.  “We have spent the last couple of weeks throwing ideas back and forth,” noted Edgin.  “I think we have a good program.”

The objective for the program is listed below:

Objective: To increase the skill sets of two student populations through interactive learning and teaching.

  • HPU Human Resource Management students will learn how to write job descriptions, create training in two discreet areas, present data in workshop fashion, screen and review resumes, and interview job candidates.
  • Brownwood ISD Economics students will learn how to write and tailor their resumes for a particular job position, see proper interviewee etiquette and technique, and then partake in an interview day to practice their skills.

On September 25th, HPU students will present a resume and interview workshop to BHS students entitled, “Resume Building & Interviewing: Tips for Success.”  During the workshop BHS students will receive resume and interviewing tips as well as descriptions for three different mock jobs for which they can choose to apply.

On October 10th, students will submit their resumes and HPU students will screen and review them before they schedule interviews which will be held on October 23rd.

HPU and Brownwood students will participate in a full-dress interview where pairs of HPU students will interview Brownwood ISD students for 5-10 minutes each.  Students will receive feedback on both sides about successes and areas that need improvement.
