Fire destroyed a home in Early Tuesday night and sent one man to the hospital for treatment.

According to Early Volunteer Fire Department Chief Chad Hill, the fire began around 11:53 PM Tuesday at a home in the 2300 block of County Road 381 (Old May Road).    Firefighters arrived to find the home fully engulfed in flames.

One man was at home at the time of the fire and was able to escape.  He was transported to the hospital with minor injuries and some smoke inhalation and later released, according to Hill.

Multiple units from the Early Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire along with one truck from the Brownwood Fire Department.  Early Police and Brown County Sheriff’s office also assisted.

Fire Marshal Buddy Preston said that the man reported that he was heating his bedroom with a portable heater and toaster oven.  He went outside and returned and said the room was on fire near the toaster oven.

Red Cross was called for assistance with clothing and shelter for the man.
