The 9th Annual Heart of Texas Quilt Show got underway Friday at the Brownwood Coliseum with over 120 entries of quilts in a variety of patterns, colors and sizes.
Entries came from across the state including local entries and other from cities such as Marble Falls, Dallas and San Angelo.
Awards given on Friday included Early Mayor’s Choice and HPU President’s Choice (pictured below). The Brownwood Mayor’s Choice and other awards will be announced on Saturday.
Heart of Texas Quilt Show chairman Angela McCorkle explained that each year an “old fashioned bed turning” is presented during the show and this year is special because one of the quilts featured is an heirloom from her family that dates back to 1885-1890. A very intricate “crazy quilt” with embroidery, photo images, and a variety of beautiful materials was discovered when her aunt’s husband unpacked some belongings of his mother. According to McCorkle, in their day, “crazy quilts” were a status symbol because of the expensive materials they were constructed with and they were not used daily as bedding but rather hung as decorations in homes. The quilt is considered to be in “perfect condition” and is valued at $18,000, said McCorkle.
Other activities during the quilt show include a raffle of a donation quilt entitled “Stars across the States.” According to guild members, the quilt has symbolic meaning. There is a star block for each state depicting that state’s name and state flower. The quilt top was pieced by members of the guild, layout design and quilting was done by Angela McCorkle. Tickets for the donation quilt are available from any guild member for $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Pregnancy Care Center.
There are also an abundance of vendors at the show with quilting equipment and supplies available for purchase. Vendors at this year’s show include A Joyful Soul, Barb’s Quilt Nook, Front Porch Quilts, Houston Street Mercantile, Nana’s Parcels, Quilts With a Heart, Ruby’s Gone Quilting, and Snips & Pins.
The show will continue Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with demonstrations, scissor sharpening and more. Admission is $7 for quilters, husbands and children under 12 admitted free of charge.
