On Monday, January 28, 2018, Hazel Wall, 102 years young, was welcomed into heaven by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Hers was a life well lived. Hazel Willie Shelton Wall was born on April 18, 1916 at home in Hico, to Charles and Mary Ella (Goode) Shelton. She was the youngest of 12 children. Her family home was filled with music and noise and she learned at a young age to love and appreciate everything wonderful about being from a large family – something the Sheltons have passed on from generation to generation.
In school, Hazel was a cheerleader and enjoyed playing basketball. She remembered riding to church in a wagon as a little girl, when the first automobile arrived in Hico and when electricity was installed at their home. After graduating from Hico High School, Hazel worked at her parent’s restaurant and as a beautician’s assistant with her sisters.
Hazel married Leslie Wall in Dublin on July 11, 1937. In 1939 they moved to Brownwood for Leslie to take a job in the grocery business. After a few years they bought that grocery store and set their roots deep in Brownwood, where they raised their two sons Richard and Kirk. Their home was filled with fun and friends – she remembered being one of the first on the block to get a TV, ensuring a steady stream of kids in and out of the house. 1957 brought an opportunity for her and Leslie to start a wholesale picture frame moulding distribution business with some friends from church – TWT Moulding Co / Wall Moulding –the family business is still in operation and proudly led by the third generation.
Hazel loved being involved in all of her boy’s activities, especially athletics. The Walls enjoyed being at Lake Brownwood with family and friends and Hazel especially enjoyed cooking for everyone. She and her brothers and sisters had a commitment to family that was evident in their annual reunions – sometimes held at Lake Brownwood but for many recent years has been near Kerrville at Mo Ranch. Her ever present smile, cheerful nature and compassionate spirit made her a favorite with her nieces and nephews.
Hazel loved music – Lawrence Welk was one of her favorites, cooking, collecting song bird figurines, playing 42, travelling with Leslie and later with her partner-in-crime Iva Hamilton and faithfully serving at Coggin Avenue Baptist Church. But most precious to her was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren – she was a proud and devoted Nana.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 49 years Leslie, 5 brothers – Ted, Garland, Morris, Charles and Norvell; 6 sisters – Ollie, Ola, Farris, Carmen, Jewel and Lucille; daughter in law Donna Wall; grandson Michael Terry Wall and step daughter Lujean Quarles.
She is survived by her sons Richard and Bonnie Wall of Brownwood and Kirk and Darlene Wall of Brownwood; granddaughters Lisa and Dave Mire, Chris and Brian Waldorf, Jennifer and Brian Williams and Marcia and Jake Christian, step granddaughters Kim Mitchell, Waynette Quarles and Kim Shappley and their families; and great grands – Sydney, Connor, Dylan, Madie, Keegan, Taylor, Makenzie, Connor, Grayson, Logan and step greats – Kaitlynn, Riley, Koralea and Logan.
Hazel once said the most important job she would ever have was being a mother. “Being a successful mother is teaching my boys about hard work and Christian living.” Everyone who knows Hazel knows she loves Jesus, and while we grieve the loss of our mom, Nana, aunt and friend, we give thanks for the blessing that was her 102 years and we look forward with hope to a heavenly reunion. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His faithful servants.” Psalm 116:15
