Employees and staff at the T.R. Havins Unit express their Christmas spirit by sharing with the elderly of the community through their Silver Angels program. This year, they adopted the residents at Brownwood Skilled Nursing.
A Christmas tree at the unit was decorated with silver angels which displayed the names of the residents for employees to “adopt”. After shopping for gifts that the residents expressed need or desire for, staff and employees of the Havins Unit then threw a Christmas party for the residents and their families. The party, held on Tuesday, included delivery of the gifts, live music by Joe Caudillo, and even Santa was in attendance.
Gateway employees that work at the unit also participated.
Robert Harmon, Correctional Officer 5, has organized the program for several years. Major Kenneth Putnam, another correctional officer, stated that the Havins Unit staff is very responsive to the program and that the angels go very quickly. Last year, Putnam was off duty when the tree went up and was not able to get an angel.
“Everyone wants to participate and the angels go really fast,” said Putnam. “What’s really neat is that there are even a few employees who are up here (at the party) on their day off.”
