Harry Leighton Bauer, age 81, went peacefully to be with his Lord on Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011 at Hillview Manor in Goldthwaite, Tx. After courageously fighting Alzheimer’s, the Lord raised him up to his Heavenly Home where there is no more suffering and his memories will be restored of the good times and the good life he had on earth and he will be able to remember the family and their names. Services will be at the First Christian Church, Brownwood on Saturday April 30, 2011 at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Greenleaf Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be at Blaylock Funeral Home 1914 Indian Creek Rd on Friday evening from 6:00-7:30.
Harry was born in Galveston, Tx on March 25, 1930, an only child to Toney and Lila Alberga Bauer. He graduated from Midland High School in 1948. He joined the US Air Force in the summer of 1948 and made a career of it for 26 ½ years. He was stationed at Lackland AFB San Antonio, Sheppard AFB Wichita Falls, Nagoya Japan, Amarillo AFB Amarillo, Wakkanai Japan, England AFB, Alexandria, La, Zweibrucken Germany and McGuire AFB New Jersey. He retired from the Air Force as SMSGT (E-8) in 1975. HE moved the family back to Brownwood and went to work at Montgomery Wards before making application for the US Postal Service, retiring in 1992.
He married the love of his life, Evelyn Easley of Brownwood on September 6, 1952 in the First Christian Church of Whaley Street in Brownwood.
He was a member of the First Christian Church where he served as deacon and was made deacon for life. He served as Property Chairman several times and on other committees. He was a Mason for over 57 years, a member of the DAV and the Brownwood American Legion. Harry and his wife Evelyn volunteered at the Good Samaritan Ministries as drivers for the Food Bank in the 1990’s. Harry was a volunteer deliverer for Meals on Wheels and was a volunteer server at the Community Thanksgiving Feast for over 12 years. He was a member of Senior Circle at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.
Harry’s hobby was golf and he loved being with his golfing buddies. A couple of times he made a Hole In One! He was a Mr. Fix-It at home and at church. Harry was also an avid 42 player and enjoyed his weekly games with his church buddies. He and Evelyn loved to travel and took many trips.
He is survived by his wife Evelyn of 58 ½ years, one daughter Evelyn Christine Trythall and husband Jerry of Frisco, Tx, two sons David Leighton Bauer and wife Kelly of Crozet, Va, Scott Easley Bauer and wife Becky of The Woodlands, Tx and special friend Dr. Linda Marie Windle of College Station, Tx; Five granddaughters Lisa Trythall Mc Near, Melissa and Elizabeth Bauer, Sarah and Kristen Bauer. Two grandsons Michael Trythall and Aaron Bauer; great-grandson Brock McNear; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law Bettye Easley Lee and husband Frank of Old Tappan, NJ; one cousin Jayne Langford and husband James of Abilene and the joy in his life, Little Bit, his toy poodle, along with several nephews and nieces and many special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Toney and Lila Bauer, this two toy poodles Meki and Cricket.
The family would like to thank the loving staff and aides at Hillview Manor for taking such good care of Harry during this time of illness and a thank you to Dr. David Smith and Dr. Chris Stephens for their caring and compassion over the years. A special thank you to Lighthouse Hospice for getting us through our difficult days and to Blaylock Funeral Home for the caring, love and direction given to our family.
