Harold Leon Everett, 89, of Brownwood, passed away August 1, 2019 from a stroke.

Visitation will be held at Heartland Funeral home from 6:00-8:00 Friday, August 2, 2019.

Saturday, August 3, a family burial will precede a Memorial Service at 11:00 to be held at the Ebony Community Center.

Harold was born October 30, 1929 in Sealy Hospital, Santa Anna, to Hildegarde Alberta (nee Fletcher) and Edward Otis Everett.  Ed and Hilda had ranched in Lometa, where they had gone to school and married.  They moved with their only child, Harold, to Eastland, where Harold finished school in 1946.  Harold went on to attend John Tarleton Institute and then graduated from Texas Tech in 1951.  Within a month he was drafted into the Army where he served overseas in Tokyo, Japan, leaving the States from Seattle, Washington.  While in Japan, he became a Mason and transferred his membership to the Eastland Lodge.  He returned to the States, sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge.  He was immediately flown home due to his Dad having died while Harold was coming home onboard the USS Breckenridge in 1953. Upon discharge he was hired by Humble Oil and Refining in Abilene.  This company had name changes of Enco, Esso, and then Exxon.

Harold met the love of his life, Edna Elizabeth Cawyer, who was also an only child, in Abilene.  They married January 15, 1955 in Abilene at the University Church of Christ Chapel.  It is said that it takes a special type of man to be the father of only girls and he had three, Shelley, Sheridan, and Elizabeth. He and “Beth” lived in Abilene until 1961 when Humble moved them to Texarkana.  There Harold and his girls enjoyed an abundance of fishing and sightseeing.  In 1965 He was transferred to Dallas and Irving.  While at the Irving Exxon Terminal he was on duty during a major fire, assisting in getting drivers to safety.  In 1986 Harold retired from Exxon with 33 years of service.

Harold’s many responsibilities with Humble and the company was opening Humble Service Stations, managing many Bulk Plants as they changed managers, and finally in the Irving Dispatch Center.  His final responsibility was moving the Irving Dispatch Center to Greenspoint in Houston for the region and nation.

Harold represented the Irving Exxon employees in their association for many years.  He volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America and shop classes at Mac Arthur High School in Irving.

Harold and Beth moved to Brownwood in December of 1990.  There he became involved with the Ebony Cemetery Association, the Ebony Community Club, and performed many ranching “Honey Do’s” for Beth at the family home place along the Colorado River.  He also worked as a driver for Holley dealer trades making friends in Brown and Mills County.

Harold is survived by his wife, Edna “Beth” Elizabeth, daughters Shelley Everett Martin, Sheridan Everett Gardner and Elizabeth Everett, five Grandchildren: Kimberly Jean Martin and David Edward Martin, Shane Everett Gardner, Seth Aaron and wife Jacie Gardner, and Shannon Nicole Gardner, and seven Great Grandchildren: Karter, Kawyer & Khristian Martin, Caitlyn & Zoe Martin, Sadie & Emersyn Gardner, along with many special friends and family.
