H. S. “Smitty” Ogletree, 92 of Comanche, passed away in Early, TX Tuesday 27, 2015. Funeral services, under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Comanche, will be held in the Heartland Chapel 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2105 with Bro. Jackie Auvenshine officiating. The family will receive friends 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Blake Cemetery at the Williams Community in Brown County. “Smitty” was born May 31, 1922 to H. T. and Gertrude Ogletree in Trent, TX. “Smitty” was a member of St. Joe Baptist Church in De Leon. He graduated from Trent High School and earned a track scholarship to Howard Payne, however circumstances required him to end his college career and enter the workforce. He was an Army Veteran and had worked for the Civil Service prior to becoming a business owner/operator. He owned service stations in Wink, Kermit, and Monahans before “retiring” to Comanche. He owned and operated Smitty’s Tire Service in Comanche until his health forced him to retire at the age of 82. Smitty was never one to bow down to obstacles, instead relying on his faith and tenacity to complete the task before him. He was known as a dedicated and hard worker, as well as a very gentle and caring man.Smitty was preceeded in death by his wife, Lee, in 2006 and grandson Jeffrey in 1977. He is deeply loved and will be missed by those who will forever cherish their memories of him.
He is survived by his children, Charlotte Vaught of Euless, TX, Melody Ogletree and Cheryl Benoit of Lubbock, Dr. James Ogletree and wife Kathy of San Antonio, and De Lana Smethers of Comanche; nine grandchildren, Paul Vaught and wife Jennifer, Kevin Vaught and wife Kathleen, Chris Vaught and wife Joyce, Matt Vaught, Tim Ogletree, Natalie Ogletree, and Troy Ogletree, Michael Smethers and Lacy Smethers; seven great grandchildren, Jordon, Aaron, Seth, Kevin Jr., Sophie, Lauren, and Kenzlee. He is also survived by Nieces Sandy Clark and Diana Frazier and husband Butch, as well as several cousins.
