Funeral services for Gwendoline M. Davis, 94, of Brownwood will be at 3pm, Sunday, August 6, 2017 at the Davis-Morris Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Pete Smith officiating, assisted by Deacon Patricia Banks. Interment will follow in Greenleaf Cemetery.
Mrs. Davis died at 7:47 pm Thursday at a local nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Gwen was born to Harry and Sarah Ann Freeman in Merthyr Vale, Glamorganshire, South Wales on July 6, 1923. She graduated from Quaker’s Yard Secondary School. She attended Exeter University and was a nurse during World War II.
She married S/Sgt Jack N. Davis, US Army, on June 11, 1945 in Lavenham, Suffolk, Great Britain. She and her husband came to Odessa, Texas in 1946 and Gwen later became an American citizen.
In Odessa, Gwen was a legal secretary at the Veteran’s Administration; at the law firm of Knight and Buckner; and in the legal department of French Tool and Supply.
Gwen and her family moved to Brownwood in 1964 where she became secretary to Dr. Guy D. Newman, president of Howard Payne University. She later became an English and French teacher at HPU. Gwen was employed at Howard Payne University for 22 years until her retirement.
Gwen held a BA degree from Howard Payne University and MA degree from Texas Tech University.
Gwen loved reading, writing, knitting and sewing, cooking, foreign languages, music, travelling and going on cruises.
She was preceded in death by her parents 1n 1977 and her husband in 1984.
Gwen is survived by one son, Jack N. Davis Jr. of Brownwood; a sister, Mrs. Marjorie Crump of London, England; nieces Sheila Davis Nicholson of Albuquerque, NM and Mrs. Amanda Norris of Wylie, and nephews James Jordan of Wylie; Roy Davis of Temple; and Mark Davis of Austin.
