On National Wreaths Across America Day each December, volunteers place wreaths on individual veterans’ graves in over 1,100 locations throughout the U.S.
Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood has been designated as an official Wreaths Across America cemetery. Orders for large evergreen wreaths are being accepted through Wednesday, November 23rd, to place on any veteran’s grave. The wreaths are like those that will be placed at Arlington National Cemetery and are $15 each. Volunteers will be available on Saturday, December 17th, to place wreaths for those who cannot do so themselves. When wreaths are laid on a grave, the veteran’s name will be said aloud in memory of his or her service.
“We are not here to “decorate graves.” We’re here to remember not their deaths, but their lives,” stated Karen Worcester, Executive Director of Wreaths Across America, on the organization’s website.
There will also be a brief service at Greenleaf to coincide with services across the nation at 11 a.m. on December 17th. Call the Greenleaf office at 325-646-6919 or Connie Wyatt at 643-2860 for more information. Order forms are available at Greenleaf and at Precious Cargo, 1900 Coggin Avenue in Brownwood. Orders are being accepted through Wednesday, November 23rd.
