The City of Brownwood and the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a grand opening and ribbon cutting on Wednesday June 23rd for the city’s new Senior Citizen Center located on 110 Greenleaf.
City officials, Chamber members, and area residents were on hand at the event to take a look at the newly renovated building. Cynthia Jackson, Director of the Senior Citizens Center, offered guided tours of the facility and showed off its many great amenities.
The center offers a recreation room, which has tables for cards, dominos, and bridge; an area with public access computers; a reading area; a pool table; fresh new roomy bathrooms; and a crisp clean dining area that seats 115. If there are more people attending meals, the recreation room can be utilized when necessary and seats an additional 68 people, making maximum seating 183.
Mayor Stephen Haynes thanked the numerous individuals and organizations that helped make the new facility possible including the Brownwood City Council, the Brownwood Parks and Recreation Department, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (for a $500,000 grant towards the project), the Brownwood Economic Development Corporation, and the architect and construction company involved in the project.
The new center has been used at a much higher rate than the previous facility in the first week of operation.
“Our usage is up about 30% – 35%,” Haynes said. “We have gone from 80 to 120 or so on our lunches so we are glad it is being utilized.”
Lunches are served at noon each day for a suggested donation of only $2 to people 60-years-old and older. Guests of seniors under 60 can also dine for a nominal price of $3.25. The center is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 am until 3:00 pm.
