Brownwood Independent School District Superintendent Reece Blincoe told school board members on Monday that a proposal to bring a new video scoreboard to Gordon Wood Stadium is on hold.
The district held a public meeting on November 29th to pitch the idea of the new scoreboard to local businesses to help secure interest in sponsorship money to make the project a reality.
“We didn’t at this time gather enough commitments to move forward on that project,” Blincoe told school board members on Monday. “I wish I had better news for you tonight but I don’t, so we’ll just go with what we have and try to keep it all together and keep it operating for a year or two.”
Although a new video scoreboard will not be a reality for next football season, Blincoe said that the district will likely revisit the proposal in the next year or two.
“It’s on hold for a while,” Blincoe said. “At this point we are going to see what next year looks like. We have a board that keeps score and keeps time so we will keep on trucking with that.”
Blincoe said that if state funding to the district gets back to normal levels, the district might be able to contribute to the cost of a new scoreboard in partnership with Howard Payne University which would require less sponsorship money from local businesses.
“I am confident that we will look at it again,” Blincoe said. “Let’s see what next year holds.”
The proposed scoreboard manufactured by Daktroics would have included a full video screen and new sound system at a cost of more than $300,000.
