The Good Samaritan of Brownwood is holding a new event this fall to raise awareness and money for hunger needs. “Empty Bowls” will be held on Friday, November 6, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Brownwood’s Depot and Civic Cultural Center. The event will include musical presentations each half hour, a silent auction, and delicious soup (donated by local businesses).
Students from Howard Payne University have partnered with board members from the Good Samaritan and individuals from the area to organize and implement the event.
The “empty bowls” will be made by local artists, HPU students and others in the community. Attendees will be encouraged to keep their bowl as a reminder of the hunger issues around the world.
According to Good Samaritan board member and HPU professor Dr. Gary Gramling, “This will be a wonderful way to remind people of the need for us to remember the hungry in our own community.”
Cost will be $10 per person. Ninety percent of the proceeds will go for local needs, while a tithe of 10 percent will go to help address international hunger needs through Heifer International.
Community members interested in contributing to “Empty Bowls” can get involved in several ways. Volunteers are needed to assist in a variety of areas on the event day. Additionally, monetary donations to support the project can be sent to the Good Samaritan.

This will be the first Empty Bowls event held in Brownwood. Empty Bowls is a grassroots project of The Imagine/Render Group, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to positive and lasting social change through the arts, education, and projects that build community.
