With a little more than a week to go, this year’s Feinstein Challenge has brought in $200,000 in cash, grants and donated grocery items. Most of that total comes from food that has been donated and counts as $1 per pound or item.
That’s down just a little bit from last year but there’s still time to be part of this challenge.
The Feinstein Challenge runs through April 30 and as part of that, everything donated for food during that time counts toward the $1 million Feinstein Challenge.
Every year Allen Shawn Feinstein puts up $1 million of his own money as a challenge to food pantries across the country to raise funds and awareness of hunger. The more food and money that is collected locally, the greater portion of that million dollars Good Samaritan Ministries is eligible to receive.
Every dollar donated counts toward the challenge and every food item counts as $1 per item or per pound – whichever is greatest.
Out of the entire 62 organizations across the country – many of which are larger food banks or organizations in large metropolitan areas – only 7 groups raised more money than GSM in last year’s challenge. Bostick said she’s excited to see what the community does this year.
With the exception of the tithe from the Empty Bowls Project, all of the money and food donated for the Feinstein Challenge – and in general, all of the money and food donated ever – to the Good Samaritan Ministries stays in Brown County to help our local neighbors.
