Singleton_gloriaGloria Singleton died Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the age of 77 in Brownwood.  A visitation has been scheduled for 5 – 8 p.m. Thursday, October 13, at the Netherton Funeral Home Chapel.  Interment will be private.

Gloria Beth Aylor was born June 6, 1934 in San Saba County, the only child of Homer Borden and Mary (Elmore) Aylor.

Gloria met the love of her life, Jerry Singleton, when he arrived in San Saba as an MP attached to Operation Longhorn.  They married December 14, 1952 and promptly moved to Chula Vista, California.  After the birth of their daughters, they returned to San Saba and celebrated more than 50 years together before he preceded her in death in February, 2008.

Gloria was an enthusiastic conversationalist, had a head for numbers and a distinctive giggle.  She served as the San Saba Full Gospel Church pianist for more than 50 years, beginning at age 13.  Her talents led her to positions as an executive secretary at Rohr Aircraft, medical transcriptionist at San Saba Memorial Hospital, secretary at Howell Doran Funeral Home and, with Jerry, as a business owner of San Saba Electric and the Montgomery Ward Catalog Store.  She retired from her favorite job as the secretary and bookkeeper for Marvin Riggs Trucking.  She and Jerry moved to Brownwood in 1994, where they became active members of Christ Chapel.  Gloria believed no soul was beyond salvation, and she was blessed with a helpful spirit that she used for the glory of her Lord.  She extended her heart and her hands many times to family, friends and complete strangers.  Alzheimer’s disease took Gloria long before her body actually left this earth, but if you were fortunate enough to know her, you will miss her.

She is survived by her daughters, D’Ann Spinks and husband Dennis of Brownwood and Sharon Ambrose and husband Randall of Nashville, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Casey Spinks and wife Marsha of Coleman, Gena Jones and husband Thomas of Old Hickory, Tennessee, Kirby Spinks of Brownwood and Jena Shea Whitehead of Nashville, Tennessee; and two great grandchildren, Corbin and Carson Jones.  Additional family includes her aunt, Nelle Aylor of Seguin; several cousins; her sister-in-law Peggy Adams and husband John of Tulare, California; her brother-in-law, A.E. VanderWyst of Chula Vista, California; several nieces and nephews and Glenda Burks, caregiver and special friend.

The family appreciates the quality care given to Gloria by the staff of both Cross Country Healthcare and Lighthouse Hospice.  They respectfully request no food or flowers.  Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer’s Research and Development Fund.
