Glen Harold Phillips, age 90, of Coleman, died Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at Coleman Healthcare Center. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 25, in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gary Boyd officiating and assisted by Rev. Daniel Stovall. Burial with military honors will follow in the Coleman Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Glen Harold Phillips was born on Oct 17, 1923 to the parentage of Lee Elmer and Mayme Elva Harrell Phillips in the community of Echo. He started school at Ray in Coleman County and graduated from Ford High School in Quinlin, Texas at the age of 16.
He joined the US Navy in March 1943 and was discharged in March 1946. During this time he served as Seaman First Class in the Armed Guard Division of the Navy. He was serving on board the Santa Monica guarding the USS Missouri at the signing of the peace treaty in Tokyo Bay that ended WWII.
After the war he worked for the Rock Island Rail Road as a telegraph operator before returning to Coleman County as a farmer/rancher and conservation contractor.
Harold married Marian Katheryn Pitts on June 23, 1948 in Coleman. This marriage was blessed with three sons (Keith, Darrell and Mark) and two daughters (Glynda and Helen).He was ordained as a deacon of the Baptist church in 1955. Through the years he served his church as Sunday school director, Sunday school teacher, Deacon and Church Clerk. He and Katie were active in mission work, serving locally as well as state and foreign endeavors.
He was a charter member of Coleman Evening Lions Club and the Coleman/Runnels County Gideon’s Camp. He served on the Soil and Water Conservation District Board 550 for 27 years. He was a member of the State Agricultural Advisory Committee of 100 for 25 years. He was Coleman County’s Rural Citizen of the year in 1997. In 2006 he was awarded Farm Bureau Pioneer Award.
Harold was loved by a large family including his wife of 66 years, Katie, their children, grand children, and great grand children. He is also survived by one brother, Fred W. Phillips and many cousins, nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 24, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Stephen Phillips, Ben Phillips, Josh Rode, T. J. Harris, Cody Ray Wade, Fred Phillips, Jr., Joey Cupps and Shilo Harris.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Frank Quinn, The Gideon’s International, Evening Lions Club and Jim Hudson.
