Georgia was born on September 28, 1914, in Erath County near Stephenville. At about age 4 or 5, she started school at School Hill, across the road from where they lived home. The two school teachers boarded with her family. In 1921 when she was 6 years old, they moved to Snyder. They loaded furniture, farm equipment, and horses on a train. The family traveled in 2 covered wagons, camping out at night, and the trip took several weeks. When they arrived in Snyder, they stayed in the wagon yard sharing the cook stove with several other families staying there. From there, they moved to Dunn, Texas.
In 1932 Georgia married Ralph Rhodes on December 3rd in Vealmoor, Texas, in Howard County. Together they moved back east to Limestone County where they farmed and started their family. They spent their last years after retirement in Brownwood where Ralph preceded her in death in 1980. Georgia stayed in Brownwood until 2000 before moving to San Angelo. While living in Brownwood, she worked as a bookkeeper for the Singer Sewing Machine Co. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Gladhand Sunday School Class, NARFE and the Women’s Auxiliary.
Georgia is survived by her children, Royce Rhodes and wife Tommy Jo of Waco, Wanda Barnes and husband Dick of San Angelo, and Ruth Jones and husband Ken of Houston; brother, Raeford Gillihan of Big Springs; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 4 great, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
At age 99, she lived a long and full life. She said she would see us at the East Gate someday. Condolences for the family may be left at www.davismorrisfuneralhome.com.
