George Ogden, 83
A memorial service, under the direction of Heartland Funeral & Cremations, will be held 2:00 pm Monday, December 18, 2017, at the First Baptist Church Brownwood. George Allen Ogden went to be with his Lord on December 15, 2017, in Brownwood, at the age of 83. George was born December 9, 1934, to his parents Ed and Ollie Ogden in Fisher County, Texas. He graduated from high school in Hobbs, Texas before attending college at Howard Payne on a track scholarship where he met his wife, Carolyn. George and Carolyn were married on May 28, 1955 in Zephyr, Texas. They moved to Sweetwater, Texas where George began a career with TxDOT in 1954. He transferred to TxDot Brownwood where he retired as the Director of Administration after a career of 40 years.
George loved his Lord and was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Brownwood where he served as a Deacon and enjoyed greeting people at his “door.” He was also a member of the Brownwood Sheriff’s Posse for several years. After moving to the country at Salt Creek near Blanket, Texas in 1998, George enjoyed raising cattle and horses. He loved woodworking and built many fine-crafted things for his family. He enjoyed the many visits from friends and his grandchildren throughout the years, especially during the summer months. George also loved to farm and planted many things including watermelons and cantaloupes. He especially enjoyed sharing his melon crop with friends, and neighbors and was known by many as “Watermelon George.”
He survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn; his three sons, Greg and wife Becky of Coleman, Scott and wife Sheila of Coleman, Alan and wife Janet of Blanket; grandchildren Tyler Ogden and wife Jade of Andrews, Bryan Ogden and wife Lindsay of Midland, Megan Jackson and husband Drew of Coleman, Brent Ogden of San Angelo, and Graham Ogden of Blanket; sister, Darlene Warren of Early; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials for George be sent to Good Samaritan Ministries, 305 Clark St., Brownwood, TX 76801.
