Brownwood Lions were defeated by the Gatesville Hornets Friday night  35-14, giving up the district championship.  Gatesville remains undefeated at 9-0 for the season, 4-0 in district play.

Brownwood High School Head Football Coach Bob Shipley stated that this was a disappointing game, and that the team knew they were going up against a phenomenal player in Gatesville quarterback Cole Edmiston.  Mistakes by the Lions were costly and shifted the momentum of the game after a solid first quarter by the Lions.

Coach Shipley said that a fumbled punt return by Brownwood gave Gatesville an easy touchdown at the end of the first quarter which was the key momentum changer.   Several missed tackles as the game progressed compounded the problems for the Lions.

“We really only had two possessions in the first half and from that we made two touchdowns,” said Shipley who explained that his team “just couldn’t get it going in the second half.”

The Lions had only two penalties for 15 yards, but there are a few things Shipley stated the team needed to work on such as protecting the quarterback and making tackles.

“The kids played hard, but just didn’t make tackles,” said Shipley.  “It was very disappointing and proves that we’ve got to drive home just how important it is to take advantage of big situations when you are up against such good athletes as tonight.”

Brownwood goes to a record of 5-4 on the season and 3-1 in district.

The Lions will face Llano at Gordon Wood Stadium on Friday, November 9th at 7:30pm to close out the regular season.  Fans are encouraged to come and support not only the Lions as a team but the seniors as they play their last game at Gordon Wood Stadium during “senior night.”
