Four students in the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom Honors Program at Howard Payne University were recently selected to receive the prestigious Hatton W. Sumners Foundation Scholarship.
Recipients, all juniors, include HPU students Kathryn Burns, a political science and communication major from Austin; Adam Hardy, a political science major from Corpus Christi; Kaitlyn Kelm, a biology major from Lindale; and Chandler Raine, a pre-law/political science from Mesquite.
The scholarship provides $5,500 per semester for two years. Students are selected after an in-depth interview by the trustees of the Sumners Foundation.
Named for its founder, former Congressman Hatton W. Sumners of Texas (Democrat, 1912-1947), who served as the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation is dedicated to the study, teaching and promotion of self-government. In addition to scholarships for students, the Foundation provides lectures and seminars that students attend throughout their two years as Sumners Scholars.
