atkinsonA special guest, Brigadier General Peter J. Atkinson of the Canadian Army and the Deputy Commander for III Corps at Fort Hood, was the guest speaker for Friday’s Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

The General was a very informative in speaking about Canadian and Afghan geography, but also about the Canadian and American economic and military partnerships.

General Atkinson spoke about the importance of the Western Training Ground located in Brown County which is still known locally as Camp Bowie.   The use of the Brownwood Regional Airport and the Western Training Ground is important to Fort Hood as soldiers are able to train for missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“Brownwood has an incredible relationship with the military, especially the 21st Calvary,” stated General Atkinson.  “What you do for your military, you enable us to train and prepare our soldiers for ops wherever they go in Afghanistan and Iraq.  When they are in harm’s way, the training they use is the training they got here in your airspace.”

General Atkinson has been in Texas on detachment with the U.S. Army for three years.
