Florene was born on February 2, 1942, to Reinhard Hugo “R.H.” and Minnie (Menzdorf) Wagner in Hamilton. She grew up in Priddy on the family farm. Florene married Clayton Louie Goerdel on August 24, 1957, in Priddy. They were blessed with 5 children: Debra, Clayton Jr, Clarissa, Darryl, and Laura.
At a young age, Florene gave her life to the Lord and was baptized on March 8, 1942, and confirmed on October 28, 1956, in Priddy. Florene was every bit of a Proverbs 31 woman; she faithfully served the Lord in every aspect of her life, passing along those teachings and faithto her kids and grandchildren. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for over 60 years; she served in numerous capacities during those years which include: Sunday school teacher off and on for close to 50 years, janitor for 10 years, choir since she was a teenager, and served in various officer positions for L.W.M.L. She started playing the organ and piano for church in 1959 and played until her health declined; playing the organ was one of her greatest joys. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, even bringing her children and grandchildren along with her to teach them the value of serving others.
Florene and Clayton opened Goerdel Insurance Agency, selling insurance in and around Brown County for 35 years. When she wasn’t working, volunteering, or keeping grandkids, she enjoyed quilting. Most of all she loved her family, grandkids and great-grandkids, as she was affectionately known as Grandmommy to them. Being “Grandmommy” was her favorite title and accomplishment, as she was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The love she gave to everyone was endless. Though we are deeply saddened she isn’t here with us now, we rejoice knowing she is singing in the angel choir now.
Florene is survived by her husband of 62 years, Clayton Goerdel Sr. of Brownwood; children, Debra Goerdel of Keene, Clayton “C.L.” Goerdel Jr and wife Beth of Justin, Darryl Goerdel of Brownwood, and Laura Goerdel Hawkins of Brownwood; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer Cox and husband Chris of Cleburne, James Weathers of Corsicana, Ashley Ellis of Brownwood, Natasha Goerdel and Jody Pate of Brownwood, Rebecca Goerdel of North Richland Hills, Rachel Carlisle of Brownwood, Stephanie Goerdel and wife Kerstein King of Brownwood, Cameron Maxwell and husband James of Columbus, GA, Ethan Goerdel of Bryan-College Station, Kensey Martinez and fiancé Austin Scheaffer of Gilmer, Jacey Sweet and husband Ranson of Austin; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Elnora Limmer and husband Victor of Priddy; and 1 brother, RubertWagner and wife Lana of Early. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Clarissa Goerdel Hardin; parents, R.H. and Minnie Wagner; sister, Lorena Schwartz and husband Melvin, and brother, Norman “Sonny” Wagner and wife Wanda.
