Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3278 and the Ladies Auxiliary observed Flag Day by joining with Junior ROTC-West Texas and Early Cub Scout Pack 4 in a flag retirement and posting of new colors at Howard Payne University on Tuesday evening, June 14. The ceremony was conducted in accordance with the US Code Flag Retirement procedures.
Air Force JROTC members participating in Summer Leadership School/Cadet Command and Staff School, which is being held at Howard Payne this week, also participated in the ceremony. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and then Early Cub Scout Pack 4 members helped carry the tattered flag that was to be retired and properly burned. The Star Spangled Banner was sung followed by the cub scouts presenting the new flag which was posted by the Junior ROTC members. James LeMond of the Brownwood Fire Department helped with the proper burning of the flag in a barrel.
Early Cub Scouts participating in the ceremony were: Jody Wilder, Ryan LeMond, Brent Grooms, Jesson Tarrant, Hunter Howard, David Lee Shields, Wes Ochoa, Shon Patrick Reedy, Cooper Reedy, Nathan Mitchell and Kyler Judkins (not pictured).
Members of JROTC West Texas who retired and posted the colors were: Richard Browning of Klein Collins High School in Spring Texas; Hunter Adams of Timberview High School in Mansfield; and Katie Claghorn from Westwood High School in Austin. JROTC West Texas members will participate in a graduation, Pass and Review ceremony, on Friday morning.
