The Brownwood Art Association will feature the work of Jay McMillen on during a special reception on Thursday, January 7th, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Art Building at 215 Fisk Avenue in downtown Brownwood. The reception is free and open to the public.

McMillen currently resides in Comanche, Texas. His work features large pieces with stretched canvas and intricate elements, creating three dimensional stories full of color and movement. McMillen’s work was recently showcased at The Turtle Restaurant in Brownwood.

“Life does not exist as a 2-dimensional flat surface; artistic representation of life, therefore, must be much more complex than representational images attached to a wall.  I portray this concept in painted images and constructed photographs, where viewers experience art presented as they live—in multi-layer, multi-dimensional space, interacting with chaos and order, interpreting the interactions from unique combinations of filters and experiences, with viewers themselves becoming an integral part of the display.” says McMillen.

Among the many interesting pieces featured in the upcoming First Thursday Exhibit will be McMillen’s “Gone to Look for America,” an interpretation of the flag of the United States, depicting how flags and national boundaries morph, and how symbols representing ideals change and no longer apply. The massive piece is Acrylic on shaped canvas, with nine 2-sided pieces, each piece is 17” x 24”, and attached on a spindle to rotate horizontally, creating 512 different possible views.
