CityofBrownwoodlogo_smallThe Brownwood City Council approved ordinances on first reading Tuesday for the 2010/2011 city budget, 2010 property tax rate, 2010 utility rates, and other fees. 

The proposed 2010/2011 Brownwood city budget is for $29,619,039 which is a decrease of 2.48% from the prior year with a proposed property tax rate for the city at 0.7452 per $100 valuation and an increase of 2 cents in the water consumption rate to $2.16. 

The final vote approving the budget and rates will be held next Tuesday, September 28 during the regular city council meeting.   

In other city business held at Tuesday’s meeting:

*The Brownwood City Council approved proposed changes to the Brownwood Police Department’s Rules and Regulations.  Police Chief Mike Corley began studying and reviewing the department rules after he took the chief position in May.  The changes make the rules and regulations coincide with the department’s general orders and standard operating procedures and makes them more consistent.

*City council approved on final reading a resolution with Atmos Energy regarding the company’s third Rate Review mechanism filing.

* City council approved two agreements with the West Central Texas Council of Governments for grants.  The first one is for $17,000 to help pay for a skid steer loader to replace an old one used in handling and processing recyclables. 

The second grant is in the amount of $10,900 to be used in partnership with Keep Brownwood Beautiful to provide backyard composting bins and an education program for the public.  Two-hundred and fifty backyard composting bins will be offered to the public on a first come, first serve basis.  A class will cover the essentials on how to compost and the overall impact of composting on the local environment.  Both grant programs will be available in October.

*Mayor Stephen Haynes appointed Steve Allman to a two year term to the city’s Building and Standards Commission.

*The council received a report that the City Secretary secured a $500 scholarship which will be used to fund the cost of recertifications.
