The Brownwood Fire Department was called to a house fire in the 1400 block of Avenue A Friday morning.

A neighbor’s sister noticed the flames coming out of the back of the residence across the street shortly after 9:30 a.m.  She called 911 and Brownwood Fire Department responded quickly putting out the flames.

According to the homeowner, all three occupants of the residence were not at home when the fire started.  The homeowner arrived, relieved to find that her three small dogs had been rescued.

“We’ve got the best neighbors,” she said pointing across the street to where the call to 911 was made.

According to Brownwood Fire Marshal Buddy Preston, the fire originated in a trash can, caused by a discarded cigarette.  No injuries were reported, but the back bedroom of the home had some significant damage to beds and one wall and window of the room.

Brownwood Police Department assisted with traffic control while the fire was extinguished and investigated.
