Multiple agencies in Brown County battled a large grass fire west of Brookesmith Monday afternoon.

The fire, at a property on County Road 226 west of US Hwy 377, began accidentally when a farmer was bailing hay Monday morning, according to fire officials on scene.  Brownwood Fire Department and Brookesmith Volunteer Fire Department were initially called and were able to put out the fire.  Another fire broke out around 1:00 p.m. as the farmer continued to bail hay at the property.

According to local fire officials, Early and Bangs Volunteer Fire Departments were called to assist Brownwood and Brookesmith firefighters.   The fire was contained around 2:30 p.m., burning a path across the property which was approximately 3/4 of a mile wide, said firefighters.

No injuries were reported; however, two firefighters were treated on scene for heat exhaustion by Allegiance Ambulance Service.CR226BrookesmithGrassfire072715KTAB
