The 2014 Big Country Chevy Dealers FCA All-Star Festival will get underway on Thursday, June 12th in Brownwood with the ladies’ and men’s basketball games, and athletes from the North and South teams getting ready for the big games.
Tuesday was media day for the upcoming event and basketball and cheer team members were present at Brownwood High School for photos and interviews before practice gets underway .
The ladies and men’s basketball games will be at the Brownwood Coliseum and will tip off at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively. One Brown County athlete, Chase Riker who recently graduated from Early High School, was one of the athletes chosen to play. Riker is a shooting guard and has played since kindergarten. His dad, Brad Riker, is a coach at EHS, so Riker grew up around the sport. When asked what he is excited most about in being selected for the game, Riker answered, “Just being around different people getting to learn about their life and just playing with some great players. These guys are picked for a reason so we should have fun playing. We have a pretty good team.”
Josh Alcorn, a 2003 Brownwood High School graduate and former BHS basketball coach (2009-2013) is the head coach for the South men’s basketball team. Alcorn recently moved to Breckenridge where he will have the head basketball coaching position at Breckenridge High School.
“It’s good coming back (to Brownwood),” said Alcorn. It’s going to be great playing in the coliseum, when that place fills up, it’s a fun atmosphere to be in.”
He explained that he is honored to be selected as a coach.
“Just getting that many good players on the court, I know they haven’t played together before, but it’s going to be fun to watch because the talent level is going to be so high. Even when you are subbing in some guys, there’s still going to be some really good basketball,” said Alcorn. “I’m just going to have to sit back and tell them to play. I’m not going to have to do much, they are going to make me look good.”
