According to Brownwood Police, an 18-year-old Brownwood man is jailed after allegedly firing 4-5 shots from a small caliber pistol at his uncle after an argument early Sunday morning.
Brownwood Assistant Chief James Fuller reported that dispatch began receiving calls of a domestic disturbance at 5:42am Sunday at a residence in the 1800 block of 8th Street. The incident was initially reported as a father and son who were arguing and the son was armed, stated Fuller. According to the report, 18-year-old Dustin Atkins and the man, which was actually his uncle, had been in an argument in which Atkins was reported to have fired shots at his uncle. Atkins’ aunt called 9-1-1 and reported the argument stating that Atkins was still armed and that his uncle was now armed and stated that he wasn’t going to let police harm the suspect.
Police formed a perimeter around the house and were able to make contact with the aunt who was still inside the residence until police were able to talk her into coming out of the house for her own safety and to speak with them, Fuller reported. When Atkins came out of the house calling for his aunt, officers instructed him to get on the ground where he was later patted down and handcuffed. Police reports indicate that Atkins’ uncle was heavily intoxicated and that Atkins was under the influence of some type of substance at the time of the incident.
Atkins’ uncle later explained to officers that the suspect had been on some type of drugs that week and that he wanted him to move out due to this alleged drug use, which started the argument. Atkins became upset and refused to leave because he didn’t have anywhere to go.
Officers located four bullet holes in the ceiling of a hallway near the living room of the residence which appeared to have been fired from a small caliber pistol.
Police arrested Atkins on charges of Aggravated Assault Family Violence with Weapon. Atkins is currently being held in the Brown County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bond.
