Press Release – With summer winding down, now is the time to start planning and planting a fall/winter garden.  The Brownwood Area Community Garden invites the public to a Fall/Winter Gardening Class and Seed Sale this Saturday August 26th, at 11 a.m. in the Shade Arbor at the Garden.  The class is free to Garden lease holders, and $5 for the General Public.

“Our growing seasons don’t exactly correspond to the calendar seasons,” notes Garden Coordinator Daniel Graham.  “Planting for the fall and winter garden starts in late summer, so our cold hardy plants will be well established before the first freeze.”  Suitable plants for fall and winter include leafy greens and many root crops, garlic, and herbs like cilantro, dill, thyme, and oregano.  Thanks to a generous seed donation, the Garden will also be offering 2017 seeds for fall crops at a discounted rate of 3 packets for $1.

In addition to planting vegetables and herbs, Saturday’s class will also touch on cover crops and composting, and raised beds at the Garden will available for lease at a discounted rate of $25 for the next 6 months (through the end of Feb. 2018).  According to Graham, “fall and winter are actually very comfortable seasons to garden here, but most people miss their chance because they start too late.”

The Community Garden is located at 1514 Dublin St. inside the Brownwood Housing Authority Park Homes. Parking is behind the Central Texas Opportunities office.  For more information, call 325-641-9029, or visit the Garden’s page on Facebook.
