A quiet roadside was the setting of a memorial service held Friday afternoon honoring the sacrifice of Marine Corporal Tevan Nguyen who was killed in action in 2010.

VFW, ladies and men’s auxiliary members along with County Commissioner Precinct 1 Gary Worley held a ceremony Friday afternoon dedicating a 3 mile portion of Brown County Road 237 to the memory of Marine Cpl. Tevan Nguyen who gave the ultimate sacrifice in 2010 while serving our country.  Numerous members of the Nguyen family were present including Cpl. Nguyen’s son, Tevan Lee Nguyen, Jr.

VFW members held flags of the United States, The Marine Corps, and the Veterans of Foreign War as the memorial sign, covered by a U.S. Flag, was unveiled.  It read, “Marine Corporal Tevan L. Nguyen Road, Semper Fi” along with a Marine insignia.

VFW Post Commander James Masters and VFW Commander of District 8 Keith King helped Tevan, Jr. unveil the memorial.  Tevan, Jr. was just an infant when his father was killed in action.  Family members stated that they were very happy to see the memorial in place.

Nguyen graduated from Hutto High School and was on the championship football team in 2005.  He had many relatives and ties to Brownwood.  According to a family member, Nguyen enlisted in the Marines his junior year of high school and was on active duty after graduating in 2007.

He was just 21-years-old when he was killed during combat operations on Tuesday, December 28, 2011 in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  His funeral was held in Brownwood with full military honors at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brownwood.  Nguyen is buried in Indian Creek Cemetery which is located along the newly dedicated portion of CR 237 approximately 7 miles south of Brownwood.
