BrownwoodNews – Around 7p.m. last night, Brownwood Police were called by a private citizen who saw a man fitting the description of escaped Brown County Jail inmate William Robert Smith, Jr.

Smith had changed out of his prison jumpsuit and was wearing clothing he had acquired after his escape. Smith had walked away from a work detail earlier that morning.

Brownwood and Early police as well as the Brown County Sheriff’s office conducted a search covering much of south Brownwood.

Police responded to Brownwood Regional Medical Center, where Smith was reported to have been seen, and found him on the southeast side of the hospital.

Smith was arrested on two warrants, Escape and Motion to Revoke Probation/Burglary of a Building, with bonds totaling $255,000.

Smith stole a truck from a nearby business as well as the clothes he was wearing. He also damaged a gate during his flight. Those felony charges were added to the charges accrued during his escape.
