Brownwood football legend Lawrence Elkins who helped lead the Brownwood Lions Football team to a 1960 state championship will officially be inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame on Monday. Elkins played under coaching legend Gordon Wood in their first state championship win that year.
Elkins went on to play football at Baylor where he was a consensus All-American in 1963 & 1964. In 1963 Elkins led the nation with 70 catches. He caught a total of 144 passes for 2,094 yards with nineteen touchdowns in his college career.
Elkins went on to the pros and played for the Houston Oilers from 1965 to 1968 where he struggled with injuries.
Elkins was inducted into the Baylor Athletic Hall of Fame in 1976 and into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994.
Other Texas Sports Hall of Fame inductees this year are Bud Adams, Lance Berkman, Burt Hooton, Chuck Howley, Tommy Kramer, Harvey Martin, Dan Reeves, and Max Williams.
The ceremony will take place at a banquet at 7 p.m. Monday at Baylor University’s Ferrell Center.
