Mr. Perkins died Sunday, August 5, 2012.
Edwin was born on March 26, 1932 in Ebony to Tom and Nita Lee (Jones) Perkins, the youngest of nine children. He attended several schools in Mills County.
In 1949 he married Bettie Matthews of Bangs. Three children were born during their marriage. Most of Edwin’s early years were spent in Brownwood. He worked for Lone Star Gas Company for 17 years. He taught himself to repair appliances by tearing down used ones in his garage at home. In the evenings after work at Lone Star he would make service calls working on appliances. His business became known as Perkins Appliance Repair. Around 1965 he left Lone Star Gas and leased a building in downtown Brownwood to open Perkins Appliance Repair. In 1966 he moved to Center Avenue. This business would later become Southwest Appliance where they later added furniture, televisions, and stereos. In 1967, Edwin married Bobbye Mazurek. In 1973, they moved to the ranch they had purchased in Ebony. He continued to operate the appliance business in Brownwood and also raised cattle on the ranch. The ranch was known and still is as Perkins Charolais Ranch. Edwin built a herd of Registered Charolais cattle and sold Charolais bulls all over and some outside of Texas. He was a member of the American International Charolais Association and served a term as the president of the Texas Charolais Association. Edwin traveled to many towns and states buying and selling cattle. He also attended and entered cattle in shows, winning many ribbons and trophies.
He enjoyed gardening, cooking Bar-B-Que for family and friends and riding his 4-wheeler with his dog on the back as he checked the cattle in his pastures.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bobbye Perkins, five brothers, Wallace, Marion, Lewis, Forest, and Raymond Perkins; a sister, Onita Perkins, and a great-granddaughter Dakota Hopper.
