Edgar Eugene“Gene” Watson died peacefully at the age of 86 with his family by his side on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at the Abilene Regional Medical Center.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2013, at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Brownwood, TX, with inurnment to follow at the Church of the Good Shepherd Columbarium.
Gene is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan; son, Joel, and daughter-in-law, Roxanne, of Littleton, Colorado; son, Tomas Townsend, of Durango, Colorado as well as many close friends and relatives.
Gene was a mentor to many and a friend to all. He was quick with a smile and always willing to give all he had. Gene truly enjoyed life to the fullest and relished each day he had on earth. He was an active member of his church serving on its board for many years.
Born July 16, 1926, in Haskell County TX, he graduated from Dimmitt High School in 1943. He volunteered for service in WWII serving proudly in the US Marine Corps.
After returning from service in the South Pacific, he met and married his wife, Joan, in Brownfield, TX in 1952, later moving to Lubbock, TX where he founded A-1 Glass Company which he owned and operated until 1988 at which time he and Joan moved to Brownwood, TX. After a brief retirement, he started A-1 Window Company which he was still actively operating up until the time of his passing.
Gene was an avid hunter as well as a dedicated bowler having bowled in over 30 USBC National Bowling tournaments always bowling with his team/best friends from Brownwood. He was also a founding father of the American Bowling Congress Youth Bowling Programs in the 1960’s serving as the President. Gene was lifelong Texas Tech and Dallas Cowboys fan and rarely missed a game.
Gene was preceded in death by one son, Rodney G. Watson.
