Kindergarten students in Ms. Lewis’ class at East Elementary were treated to a Thanksgiving lunch on Tuesday, November 20th. Parents were invited to come and enjoy a Thanksgiving party with their kids who had been preparing for the meal by bringing canned vegetables throughout the week. “Whatever they brought they combined like the Pilgrims and Indians,” said Lewis adding that the students actually made the butter served at each table by shaking cream in baby food jars.
The students had been learning about the Pilgrims and Indians and the different aspects of Thanksgiving in the weeks leading up to the meal. With questions placed on each table for parents to ask, the students were given an opportunity to show off what they’ve learned. “The parents represent the Pilgrims, and the students represent the Wampanoag Indians,” said Lewis. “We’ve even studied the domestic and tamed turkey, so they can tell you all about that.”
Thanksgiving decorations created by the students adorned the classroom, and many students wore paper headbands they made. “We actually researched the Wampanoag Indians because I didn’t want them to wear headbands if they weren’t actually worn back then,” noted Lewis. “They also made placemats and we’ve done some Indian symbol writing. Some of the placemats contain actual sentences.”
Students also wrote four things they were thankful for on paper hand decorations that were cut out and hung above the tables reminding everyone how much we all have to be thankful for this holiday season.
