On April 10th, several of the classes at East Elementary participated in “One Day Without Shoes” sponsored by Tom’s shoes. This event is to raise awareness of the many children in the world who do not have shoes and the dangers of not having proper footwear.
Third grade student, Eme Beaumont, brought the idea to principal Nanda Wilbourn.
“During spring break we were visiting my grandmother. She had a Tom’s catalog and I read about the One Day Without Shoes,” said Beaumont, explaining where she got the idea. “I thought it would be great if our school could particpate.”
After the event, Wilbourn asked Beaumont what she learned from the day.
“You should be thankful that you have shoes so you won’t get sick or get diseases,” Beaumont replied. “We also get to donate the shoes we collected to kids who don’t have them so they can stay healthy.”
Wilbourn noted that what she learned from the day is, “that one little girl with one idea can positively effect a lot of people!”
