Brownwood Fire Department was called to a house fire in the 2800 block of Avenue C early Tuesday morning.
According to Fire Marshal Buddy Preston, the fire was initially called in as a fire in the wall between a bedroom and living room of the home; however, Preston stated it began in the attic.
A female resident of the home woke to the smell of smoke and called 911 at 2:45 a.m. The occupants, a family of four, were able to escape without injury, along with their pets, two dogs and two cats.Firefighters arrived on scene to find flames shooting out of the roof. Preston stated that the fire, which was in the attic, was a bit difficult to get to because the home had a drop ceiling and the attic had a layer of shake shingles, covered with tar paper and a metal roof. Firemen were able to remove one section of the metal roof and access the attic to extinguish the fire. Some of the blown-in insulation of the attic was also found to be smoldering and was removed to prevent further damage.
The home, according to Preston, is not a total loss and should be able to be repaired. The only fire damage in the home was the one bedroom while other rooms in the home had only some water damage. Preston stated that the homeowners did have insurance.
The American Red Cross was called in to assist the family with immediate needs.
Early Fire Department was called to assist with the fire. Brownwood Police and EMS also responded to the scene of the fire.
