Mike Isbell – Brownwood City Manager Bobby Rountree met Thursday with local Red Cross representative Johnny Gooch, Steve Bales with the Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT), and Bill Fraser with the Brownwood Amateur Radio club (BARC) and Brown County SkyWarn. SkyWarn coordinator Bill Fraser said the meting was to discuss the possibility of the three non-profit groups acquiring the old Central Fire Station at Main and Austin in Brownwood, after the fire station relocates to it’s new station at the former Red Cross location.
According to Fraser, Roundtree said the city would not be leasing building to anyone due to structural problems. It was built in the 1960’s and is also full of mold and is a health hazard. Roundtree told the group that the city is preparing to tear the building down, then sell the property for commercial purposes. The City Manager, however, said the new fire station will include an area for disaster operations, meetings, and training. Red Cross representative Johnny Gooch said the Red Cross already has a facility in the Family Services Center, and that would suffice for now. Fraser added that Rountree was very informed on each of the organizations functions and capabilities, and is eager that all the organizations be able to function in the event of a disaster. The new fire station completion date is set for August 2014.
