CityofEarly_cityhallThe City of Early joined Brownwood, Brown County and other organizations in the hiring of a legislative consultant in Austin. Former State Representative Bob Turner has been hired for Rural Issues Consultation services during the current Texas Legislative session by these governing bodies and organizations.

Turner will act as the “eyes and ears” for the area in case something is proposed in Austin that would have a negative impact on the area.  This will better enable local officials to take action to help protect local interests and jobs.

Steve Fryar made the request for the City of Early last Tuesday to join the effort on behalf of the Legislative Affairs Committee of the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce.

The cost to hire Turner as a consultant is $5000 per month for the four month session, for a total of $20,000.  The City of Brownwood, Brown County, The Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Brownwood Economic Development Corporation have agreed to fund $5,000 each.  The City of Early approved the payment of $4000 towards the hiring of Turner as the consultant.  Many on the Legislative Affairs Committee expect the Texas Legislature to hold a special session this year which will require Turner’s services longer than the four months.

With the state budget deficit being so large, it is expected that some jobs will be cut; however this effort is intended to keep as many state jobs as possible in the area.

Turner will be the guest speaker Friday, February 18th at the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
