Antigone Now is a short drama by Melissa Cooper and inspired by Sophocles’ Antigone.
The story: After the death of Oedipus, his two sons, Polyneices and Eteocles, agreed to share leadership of Thebes, alternating terms in office. But after his first term in office, Eteocles refused to yield the throne to his brother. Polyneices enlisted a foreign army to lay siege to his homeland, and a brutal war ensued. The war ended last night when the two brothers killed each other in the streets of the city. Left to pickup the pieces of the city and their lives are their sisters, Antigone and Ismene, while their uncle, Creon, the new king, makes plans to bring the city back into health and wealth by rule of law.
