Keep Early green, clean and beautiful is the mission of the City of Early Beautification Commission which is starting its third year of activity. The commission has been busy with several projects throughout the year and will soon offer recycling to citizens of Early.
On the second Saturday of each month, there will be a recycle trailer from Brownwood Recycling Center parked at Early City Hall (next to Sonic Drive-In). The Beautification Commission is looking for volunteers to assist with this project for a few hours per month. The Commission appreciates the partnership of Brownwood Recycling Center for making their trailer available to the citizens of Early. All trash collected in Early is taken to the City of Brownwood’s landfill since the City of Early does not have one. By recycling items like newspaper, magazines, aluminum cans, glass bottles and plastic water bottles/milk jugs (#1 & #2), citizens can not only help save our environment, but also help save money spent on the use of the landfill.
Another project that helps keep the citizens of Early safe also benefitted the Early Volunteer Fire Department; its proceeds were given as a donation from the commission. Reflective numbers for residential mailboxes were offered by the commission in order to help emergency personnel find locations of people in need of their help a little easier. This especially helps first responders in rural areas.
The Brick “EARLY” sign which sits at the intersection of highways 84 and 183N has recently been updated by the commission with art featuring a newer ‘Longhorn’ design and new, higher quality material for the lettering that should last approximately 10 years.
During Christmas holidays, the Commission created the annual Christmas Lighting Contest with two prizes-one for residential owner and one for a business. This contest is designed to add pride and beauty to the town of Early and grows in participation each year.
To develop pride of both business and residential properties, the commission awards Yard of the Month and to businesses- Beautification Award of the Month. The commission partnered with two businesses, Sue’s Backyard Nursery and Cullen’s Hometown Market, to furnish nursery type items as a gift to these award winners.
