Dr. Homer Bryan Allen Jr. went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, July 27, 2017, in Brownwood Texas. He was 97. Homer was born in Temple on Oct 24, 1919, to Dr. Homer Bryan Allen Sr. and Carrie Camp Allen. He graduated from Brownwood High School in 1936. He attended Texas A&M and was on the swim team until 1939, when he accepted an appointment to the Naval Academy in Annapolis. His class was rushed through to have officers for World War II, so he graduated from the Naval Academy in 1942. While as a commissioned officer in the navy, he served as a chief engineer, chief gunnery officer, executive officer, and navigator on three different ships – the USS Kearney, USS Watts, and USS Rowe. He was discharged in 1946 after having witnessed the end of WW II from his ship. Homer then attended medical school at UT Galveston. It was while in medical school in Galveston that he met the love of his life, Carolyn Lenore (Jolly) Jordan, who was a pharmacist in Galveston at the time. Homer and Jolly were married on September 18, 1948. Upon graduation from medical school in 1950, Homer and Jolly moved back to Brownwood where Homer practiced medicine with his father at Medical Arts Hospital. In 1954, he moved his family to McGregor, Texas where he practiced medicine until 1960. At that time, he decided to specialize in ophthalmology, so he moved the family to Baltimore for his residency in Johns Hopkins Hospital. After finishing his residency in 1963, Homer set up his practice back in Brownwood, where he practiced ophthalmology until his retirement in 1993. He loved his Savior and Lord Jesus, serving as a Sunday teacher, a Gideon, and a medical missionary in Pakistan, Australia and Mexico. He enjoyed his family, hunting, raising cattle, reading, and was an avid Brownwood Lion football fan.
