Memorial services for Bryce Zint Reid, DDS, 85 of Brownwood, Texas are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday May 18, in the First Baptist Church in Brownwood. Dr. Richard Jackson, Dr. Rodney McGlothlin and Bill Slaymaker will officiate. A private family burial service will take place at Eastlawn Saturday morning. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Davis Morris Funeral Home in Brownwood.
He passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at the Brownwood Regional Hospital after a recent surgery.
Bryce Zint Reid was born March 26, 1928, in Gonzales, Texas to Rupert Cheatham and Gertrude Zint Reid. He graduated from Gonzales High School in 1946 and was selected to play in the Texas Coaches High School All Star Football game in Corpus Christi in 1946. He graduated from Baylor University in Waco, Texas where he received his BS and MS in Education in 1951. While attending Baylor he was a football Letterman and member of the Baylor Chamber of Commerce. In 1950, he played in the first game at the new Baylor Stadium and played in Baylor’s first bowl game-the Dixie Bowl, on January 1, 1949 in Birmingham, Alabama.
He married Edna Fay White in 1951 in Lancaster, Texas.
He was privileged to enjoy two professions.
COACHING – After graduating from Baylor he was a Line Coach at Sherman High School ’51-’54, Head Coach at Marlin High School ’54-’57, Assistant Coach at Southwest Texas State (Texas State) ’57-’58 and continued a lifetime of supporting coaches and the coaching profession.
DENTISTRY – In 1958 he entered Baylor University School of Dentistry in Dallas Texas, receiving his DDS degree in 1962 as a member of the National Dental Honor Society. Bryce practiced in Brownwood for 35 years until his retirement.
He was also a 1st Lt of the 36th Division Texas National Guard in Gonzales, Texas from 1950-1956.
FAITH – He was a member of First Baptist Church in Brownwood, Texas for over 50 years. He was baptized in 1938 in Gonzales, Texas when Dr. Joe Trussell, an evangelical music director was leading a revival. He was ordained as a Deacon at First Baptist Church in Sherman, Texas in 1953. He was on a Lay Renewal Team in Australia in 1979. For 21 years he led a Dental Mission Trip to Rio Grande City and Camargo, Mexico with a mobile dental unit. He was an avid Bible scholar and taught Sunday school from college into retirement for over 60 years.
SERVICE – Joining the Lions International Club in Marlin, Texas in 1954, he served a total of over 53 years. He was a Charter Board Member of Region 15 Educational Service Center. He was on the Boards of the Texas Forts Trail, The Brown County Museum of History, Brownwood ISD School Board, Brownwood Community Hospital and Heart of Texas Dental Society.
AVOCATIONS – He was an avid hunter and conservation list with longtime friends. Great hunts with J.Y. Hamilton Hunt Club at Big Bend Ranch. In a 1967 hunt, he was honored with the Regional mule deer award, with a 12 point mule deer that had an inside spread of 28 inches, and a long tine of 13 1/2 inches. He also hunted many years with friends in Artesia, New Mexico and elk hunting in Colorado.
He enjoyed ranching, hunting, fishing and horseback riding at his Salt Mountain Ranch in Blanket, Texas. His cattle brand was Circle Z. He also enjoyed travels to Europe, British Isles, China, Australia, Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico and the Caribbean.
FAMILY – Dr. Reid is survived by Edna, his wife of 61 years, son Tim and wife Sally of San Angelo, daughter Jenny and husband Jay Allison of Frisco, son Doug and wife Kay of Waxahachie, Texas, daughter Sarah and husband Tim Ford of Houston, 10 grandchildren-Zachary, Jency, Zane, Brittany, Ethan, Logan, Lucas, Bridget, Aubrey, Brooke, one spouse-Jeremy Weeks, two step grandsons-Capt. TS Ford-Afghanistan, Brett-Houston and one great-grandchild-Jacey Weeks, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews from Gonzales, Texas and Lancaster, Texas.
He is preceded in death by his parents Rupert and Gertrude Reid and sister and brother-in-law Marylin and Al Farmer of Richmond, Texas.
